Since yesterday evening,
the Yahoo IM client Trillian cut off access to its own network and will also prevent future that the software has access to the network. Yahoo justified the move as a “preventive measure against spam.” P>
Trillian has been developed by the software house Cerulean networks and allows users to interact with IM contacts on the services actually incompatible Yahoo, AOL and MSN combined. P> p>
The measures now taken by Yahoo, are not new. In the past the company has tried by changing the protocols to exclude third-party IM clients. They have adapted their software to the game and started all over again. P>
While the measures of Yahoo last fall, apparently had no success, they now want to stay tuned. Starting with the statement that it’s really just an action to tackle spam, said a staff member: “With continuous changes in the protocols, we believe we can prevent abuse of our system by spammers.” P>
Market researcher Yankee Group expect that in April between five and eight percent of all IM messages sent to companies were spam. An increase in the share is unlikely, however, because IM users must first contact their permit access. E-mails, however, can be sent without prior authorization. P>
