Two major manufacturers of integrated circuits, Intel and TSMC, continue to develop partnerships with each other. Earlier this year, both parties have signed a “memorandum of understanding” under which the Taiwanese chip maker will be engaged in the manufacture of semiconductor products for Intel. It would seem, Intel has its own production facilities around the world, so use the services of a third-party chip maker to her disadvantage. However, in case it was a highly integrated and multi-SoC-solutions (System-on-Chip), which are not very specialized area of Intel. On its basis, TSMC will manufacture processors based on the Atom architecture and its modifications.
Now it is known that the Taiwanese chip maker will also manufacture chipset for Intel. We are talking about chipsets Langwell. It is these devices will be part of the platform Moorestown, which will be launched in late 2009 – early 2010. Production of core logic chipset will be based on 65nm process technology.
In addition to the core logic
Langwell in the Moorestown platform includes CPU Lincroft. The latter is able to perform several tasks: the actual function of the CPU, GPU, memory controller and video decoder. Langwell is the same chip with integrated system bus controller and a set of solid-state disk I / O blocks to enable the unit to work with a range of peripherals.
Recall that the Moorestown platform was presented Chandrasekerom Anand (Anand Chandrasekher) during last year’s October Forum Intel Developer Forum in Taiwan. Then the public could see the first working prototype MID-apparatus. Moorestown is positioned as a solutions developer for handheld MID-sets, “imprisoned” for work with online applications and a broad set of multimedia features. However, the major features of devices based on the new platform is not so much grown up performance, as efficiency and longer battery life on one battery charge.
However, in the development and marketing of Intel’s Moorestown platform will help not only Taiwanese TSMC. The list of partners, hence the South Korean company LG Electronics, which is entrusted with the creation of ready-MID-devices based on Moorestown as the hardware base, Moblin v2.0 as a software base.
