The two Japanese chip-blacksmiths Toshiba and Fujitsu join forces to produce by March 2002 and a 1-gigabyte dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip. This is a team recruited from some 100 developers from both companies told the two companies. The team will focus entirely on development center in Toshiba’s ultra-high-density-0 0.13-micron technology. Analysts expect that to join another chip manufacturer, because the development is connected with huge costs. Toshiba and Fujitsu reckon first with $ 254 million for the 1024 Entwicklungskoten-Mbyte chip. This collaboration is the first of the two competitors. Apparently, the drastic fall in prices for DRAM chips and the resultant poor annual results a distribution of development costs make it necessary. Other vendors such as Acer and Texas Instruments are considering to withdraw completely from this area. Fujitsu also had this taken into account (reported ZDNet).Contact: Fujitsu, Tel: 06172/1880, Toshiba Europe, Tel: 02131/1580 P>
