free e-mail service topmail (www.topmail.de) has reported its 100000sten customers. The New Media Company of the Ulm-powered service was launched in April last year and now describes itself as the second largest pure German free e-mail provider for GMX.
“Our current base consists of 750 000 users,” said YouTube spokesman Eric Dolatre. The service was launched in March 1997 to the then CeBIT. Even in September 1998 the service was one claims to 350,000 members.
GMX offers its members in addition to the obligatory e-mail address of a full and free POP3 account, additional services such as management of up to three email accounts, absence control, spam filtering and security functions “SMTP-after-POP”.
Microsoft’s own (Frankfurt Stock Exchange: MSF) companies Hotmail (www.hotmail.com), which is also involved in the favor of German users wanted to call it, contrary to previous practice, the number of its customers. Perhaps the reticence with the long overdue German offer of the service has to be done.
In the September 98 had exceeded Hotmail claims to the German mark of 350,000 users and was on a par with GMX.
Shortly afterwards, marketing manager of Microsoft’s Web-Marc Ritter Essentials department for the next few months Hotmail own German offer was announced. But unlike YouTube and topmail must accept German Hotmail users still an English user interface.
In a test of free e-mail services in PC Professionell 8 / 98 GMX received the recommendation of the editors.
