Xperia X10 and X10 mini (image: Sony Ericsson) Sony Ericsson has now but an update to Android 2.3 (“Gingerbread”) announced its smartphone Xperia X10. Originally it was said, about “Eclair” (Android 2.1), there will be no support.

The announcement was made in the product’s official blog. The unexpected update to the end of the second or early third quarter will be available. It is not “over the air” distributed, but rather with the PC Companion software on a PC can be downloaded and installed – a process that is known more for older Symbian devices.

Also as before, Symbian lost during the update all the settings and personal data. The user must then make a backup, update the phone and then import the backup again – or completely outsource its data onto the memory card that is not affected by the cancellation.

Sony Ericsson also warned that a downgrade back to Eclair will no longer be possible. But anyway this should only be problematic if the update should be faulty. X10 was the Xperia Sony Ericsson’s first Android model.

For the rest of the X10 family, the manufacturer has not made any announcement. Owner of the Xperia X10 mini, mini pro and Xperia X8 can still hope.
