According to informed circles Sony will ship its netbooks with the help of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) processors Brazos in a market segment with higher prices. These AMD chips contain two processing cores and graphics hardware and to offer solid performance – an improvement over Intel’s Atom processors, which are the de facto standard for netbooks.

“Sony wants out of the netbook market,” said one informant. Intel had “a large gap in the market for AMD,” leave. “In this performance gap fits a semi-trailer. AMD can go into as much by the way, and gain sympathy from the PC manufacturers.”

The new Sony computer with AMD processors will be priced at about $ 500 (€ 400) are located, so typical of the netbook. “Sony sees itself as a premium brand. In this sense it is meaningful to them,” said Bob O’Donnell, analyst at IDC. When Sony wanted to make no comment upon request. As the “ultra portable” 11.6-inch Lenovo ThinkPad X120e with processors from the AMD Fusion to the Sony E-series devices will be introduced at CES.

According to a report by Engadget Toshiba also has a system based on AMD processors for the CES in stock. Also, this model should not be marketed as a “netbook”. The device is “much more”, we hear from the company.

One analyst says that had the appearance of these AMD systems a bad omen for netbook with Atom chip, “These high-end products could make it to dry out the conventional netbook market,” said Richard Shim of DisplaySearch. “Customers have fallen in the prices of netbooks, but not their performance,” added Nathan Brookwood of Insight64.

At Intel, however, you are absolutely convinced that netbooks have become obsolete for a long time to not-atomic basis. “CES visitors get some really cool, super-chic netbooks to be seen with excellent battery life. Intel plans to integrate frequently requested, exclusive features such as ‘Wireless Display’ (wireless image transmission) in upcoming netbook models. All in all, we expect around 100 new netbook and tablet computers in the coming months – in addition to the models that are already on the market, “said Intel spokesman Bill Kircos.
