Three of the largest consumer electronics market players have launched a joint national program in the U.S., which allows you to take a free recycling gadgets expired resource. Sharp, Toshiba and Panasonic are participating in this program through a joint venture, Electronic Manufacturers Recycling Management Co. (MRM), has 280 points for admission to the United States. Basically, in each state are at least two receiving stations, but in North Dakota, Wyoming and Virginia built only on one point.
“We have plans to expand the network to receive the spent her life electronics in the near future, the first phase we will grow from 280 to 400, then 600 and 800 acceptance points,” – says David Thompson (David Thompson), President MRM. Upgrade to 400 centers to be completed by the end of this year already, and in late 2011 the company expected growth of the network to 800 points. “We are creating a joint platform MRM, in which producers can come together and share the costs of building infrastructure for receiving the end of their term of goods,” – says Thompson.
Consumers can get rid of TVs, VCRs, computers, laptops, portable players, mobile phones and other electronics made by the three manufacturers free of charge, with many centers adopt techniques from other manufacturers, although the intake of certain products will have to pay. Basically, it depends on the state laws governing the processing, and agreements between the manufacturer and MRM to receive goods. Thompson also claims that the MRM is committed to complete processing and will not resort to dumping of wastes or their smelters abroad.
SC U.S. federal prisons (Federal Prison Industries, Unicor) also promotes its services as a recycler of electronics, despite criticism from some ekozaschitnyh group saying that prisoners are not provided with the appropriate level of protection from exposure to toxic substances that may located inside the processing facilities.
Question about sending waste by sea has also received considerable criticism from groups such as Greenpeace, which has made a photo report and video footage of the major processing centers in China and India. In some areas, workers dismantling electronics made by hand and burned on an open fire semiconductors and other components for the production of valuable materials. A slight deviation from the rules, and toxic chemicals released into the air or penetrate into the groundwater.
