RIAA: Online piracy is growing

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has released Tuesday Urheberrechstsverletzungen statistics on the Internet in the first half of 2000. Accordingly, in the period over 4500 websites were hosted in the USA found in illegally copied data. This represents an increase of 200 percent over the same period last year.

“In the U.S. companies lose about $ 300 million each year through copyright infringement, the Internet is not included,” said the director of the Anti-Piracy RIAA, Frank Creighton. “We’re looking for ways how we can measure the loss through the Internet.”

The Forrester analyst Eric Scheirer expects an increase in the share of music piracy. In addition, artists go on to publish their works independently of the record labels to online on the Internet. Because of this Entwcklung he estimates the potential loss of the music industry to record sales of 3.1 billion dollars until 2005.

According to RIAA, in the first half of 2000 over 1600 domains taken from the network, the illegal copying of music were offered. These were 348 percent more than in the first six months of 1999, which had 375 auction sites to close down her shop. The RIAA has sent out the first half of the year, 460 Note-mails to site owners, by facilitating links to download illegal copies. Verlgeichszeitraum in the previous year it had been 360th

But analysts on the success of the RIAA’s methods are not convinced. “Neither of digital copy protection or judicial processes to be able to stop theft of content on the Internet. No matter whether they are good or bad for Napster, the traditional publishers will have to deal with it, as they can hit songs with his own weapons,” said Scheirer. “You must provide services attractive to users with the desired content in the formats that they want and use the business model that consumers demand.”

The industry association RIAA in December 1999, five months after the launch of Napster, brought an action against the company. The lawyers accused the company to promote their MP3-sharing service Copyright Infringement.

Users of software such as Napster or Gnutella are automatically part of an MP3 community: The programs focus on the local system with a directory of songs to be released, can be accessed by other Napster users.
