Hewlett-Packard has issued in connection with the announced cessation of its WebOS the first hardware redundancies. According to sources from All Things Digital up to 525 employees are affected. The first should already during this week, losing their jobs.

The company confirmed the job cuts, but made no indication of the extent of the layoffs. “As announced on August 18, HP will set the development of WebOS devices in its fiscal fourth quarter, which ends on October 31, 2011,” said a spokesman. “As part of this decision, we reduce the number of employees of the division WebOS.”

During the renovation of the HP division but stand by its commitments to its customers WebOS, the spokesman said. Support and service would be ensured by the measures and not adversely affected. About the Future of WebOS software had been no decision yet.

Earlier this month it was revealed that HP-division split the WebOS and will integrate the software into the Business Office of Strategy and Technology. The aim is thus to find the best way to monetize the mobile operating system. The hardware sector will however remain in the Personal Systems Group for HP is also looking for strategic alternatives. Preferred solution is to split into a separate company, according to the HP board member Ray Lane, following the example of Agilent to a “sister company” should be.

Late last week, Richard Gammel HP shareholder lawsuit against HP in the United States has filed. He accuses the computer maker to have misled its investors. HP said to have concealed during the development of the tablet touchpad that WebOS is no longer central to the corporate strategy. Gammel wants to broaden the appeal of a class action for all shareholders, between 22 18th August 2010 and August 2011 bought HP’s shares.
