O2 introduces eco-index for Mobile Phones

Telefónica O2 to offer through its subsidiary in Germany a “Eco Index”. It is a system for assessing the environmental and social impact of mobile phones. It is designed to help customers to learn about sustainability aspects of individual devices. The index value is now displayed in the online product overview and is visible from the fall in the shops of the mobile provider.

The Eco-Index Telefónica has developed together with the British organization Forum for the Future. In Great Britain it was introduced in August last year. It is based on research conducted in the sustainability reports and supplementary information provided by the manufacturers. The necessary information out of Apple have provided all relevant companies available.

At the start of the rated Eco Index in Germany just over 80 percent of the available devices at Telefónica. In the next few weeks, all models of the participating manufacturers are compared.

The index includes mainly environmental impact of mobile phones. For example, will determine whether harmful or toxic substances and materials put into the device, whether the packaging is recyclable and how sustainable resource use in the manufacture.

Even if a mobile phone with navigation functions, or an integrated camera features, this has a positive effect on the assessment. Reason: The’m finally making use of other redundant hardware and thus save a resource.

In addition to the Eco Index Telefónica calls for discussion on whether and how a sustainable lifestyle and consumption is possible with smart phones and apps.
