Göttingen has a new supercomputer from NEC started working. The Society for Scientific Data Processing Göttingen (GWDG), the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) and the Institute of Geophysics, Georg-August University in Göttingen have jointly funded him.
Equipped with the Intel processors, high-performance computer NEC LX-2200 is in the data center GWDG. It is especially used for the simulation of geophysical and magneto-hydrodynamic processes. The research focus at the Institute of Geophysics is partly due to the investigations on the earth’s magnetism as well as geophysical fluid dynamics in general, while the researchers at the MPS, the new high-performance computing systems (HPC), especially for the simulation of magnetic fields and currents in the plasma of solar interior and the extensive use solar atmosphere.

The HPC cluster system consists of nearly 200 HPC 1812Rb-2-mini-blade systems with ConnectX InfiniBand HCAs on-board integrated in an InfiniBand network, an additional Gigabit Ethernet network and a Fast Ethernet for administration purposes. Manage the HPC systems with NEC OSCAR-Pro, for a Linux-based HPC systems, the NEC is developed management tool.
“As a platform for applications in scientific and technological environment, NEC offers the Server HPC 1812Rb-2. It integrates eight processor sockets on four compute nodes in a 2U enclosure. In conjunction with the onboard InfiniBand interfaces, it is especially when it comes to keeping space requirements, cost and energy efficiency, and integration density, “said Andreas Findling, senior product line manager at NEC Germany.
