24 global mobile operators have to start the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona together for “Wholesale Applications Community.” According to a press release they will jointly create an open platform for applications. Programs based on it should function independently from the wireless provider, by various devices and operating systems running on it.
Wholesale Applications are in the community include the German Telekom, Mobilkom Austria Group and Vodafone,. Together, the members of the world claims to have over three million customers. The GSM Association (GSMA) and the manufacturer LG Electronics, Samsung and Sony Ericsson support the initiative.
The plans are fairly specific: One wanted to develop based on JIL (Joint Innovation Lab), an environment for developing mobile Web services, and BONDI, a standard platform, it said. The whole thing should happen in the period of one year. From this project will ultimately result in collaboration with the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium), a common standard. This approach guarantees that developers could build applications that are truly usable on all mobile devices. In the future, they should even be portable between mobile and fixed devices.
“The approach is consistent with the principles of the GSMA,” said a spokesman for GSMA. “He brings forward the work that we have with our One-API (Open Network API) is already done.”
