MWC: Mobile phone providers are planning joint application platform

24 global mobile operators have to start the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona together for “Wholesale Applications Community.” According to a press release they will jointly create an open platform for applications. Programs based on it should function independently from the wireless provider, by various devices and operating systems running on it.

Wholesale Applications are in the community include the German Telekom, Mobilkom Austria Group and Vodafone,. Together, the members of the world claims to have over three million customers. The GSM Association (GSMA) and the manufacturer LG Electronics, Samsung and Sony Ericsson support the initiative.

The plans are fairly specific: One wanted to develop based on JIL (Joint Innovation Lab), an environment for developing mobile Web services, and BONDI, a standard platform, it said. The whole thing should happen in the period of one year. From this project will ultimately result in collaboration with the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium), a common standard. This approach guarantees that developers could build applications that are truly usable on all mobile devices. In the future, they should even be portable between mobile and fixed devices.

“The approach is consistent with the principles of the GSMA,” said a spokesman for GSMA. “He brings forward the work that we have with our One-API (Open Network API) is already done.”

. An analyst at IDC, added: program “developers of mobile applications, are facing a very tattered industry, both in terms of platforms, as well as the practices of individual mobile operators, the developers want, but attracting as many customers as possible – and that is so efficient and effortlessly as possible. The Wholesale Applications community can meet this requirement if it establishes a simple, single point of access to the offerings of many providers. It should also help to promote the use of existing open standards among developers, providers and manufacturers. This reduces the disunity and uses the entire industry. “
