Microsoft pays $ 200 million for VPN Patents

Microsoft has announced that it terminated the ongoing patent dispute with VirnetX, by paying $ 200 million. Part of the out of court settlement is that Microsoft may use VPN technologies in its products.

VirnetX had sued Microsoft in 2007, as Windows XP and Vista used its techniques to secure a virtual, encrypted tunnel through the Internet. In March 2010 a U.S. district court ruled in favor of VirnetX: Microsoft should pay for infringing patents VPN $ 105.75 million. Two days after this ruling VirnetX resubmitted a complaint: Even Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 used the patented technology in question, it said in the indictment.

The U.S. patents are numbered 6,502,135 and 7.18818 million, which describe specific ways to secure a VPN connection over IP. The action is set in train the agreement.

The two companies issued a joint press release. Microsoft gave its comments short, but very polite. “We look forward to further progress of VirnetX, when it developed its technology”, is legal counsel Tom Burt cited. VirnetX even took the opportunity to draw attention to his project Secure domain name.

VirnetX is really self-Software producer – but so far not very successful. A message with the SEC on 7 May reported a turnover of patent fees in the amount of $ 255,685, as Reuters notes. Since entering the market until 31 March 2010, the company lost $ 40.59 million.
