Under the new rules Providers are obligated to their advertising messages to uniquely identify. The Fair Trade Commission FTC is required to develop within the next six months, plans for a US-wide registry for Internet users who generally do not want e-mail advertising. Senders of unsolicited commercial messages can be prosecuted up to six million dollars with fines of up to two million dollars, in the case of deliberate violation of even. Mailers misleading advertising or unprotected pornographic offers threaten even imprisonment. P> p>
Critics did, however, the new provisions do not go far enough. In their view, legitimizing the new law a number of advertising messages that are perceived by the recipients are still as annoying garbage.
