Intel networked cities with WiMax

The world’s largest chip maker Intel is driving the WiMax wireless technology. By end 2006, 100 cities have their own network. Currently the company has 13 cities, helping in building projects where such technology is used and come in the next 18 months, the number could rise to around 100, said Anand Chandrasekher of Intel’s marketing. On cooperation with the cities of Intel hopes to develop the market for WiMax. Are among the participating cities including Taipei and Jerusalem.

So far, the technology – an evolution of the now widespread short-range wireless radio – no great economic significance. With the technology, large amounts of data at high speed to be transmitted wirelessly to 50 kilometers. This allows build up regional radio networks, such as where an Internet-based supply of high DSL access is not possible.

According to Chandrasekher, Intel is working on the project together with several computer companies including Cisco Systems, Dell, IBM and SAP.
