Intel is facing the delivery of two low-power server processors based on the Xeon-E3-series with Sandy Bridge architecture for high-density micro server. It has also announced that more will follow within two years of server chips with low power consumption. P> p>
Newcomers both complement the Xeon family E3-1200. They are called E3 and E3-1260L-1220L. Its thermal design power (TDP) is 20 watts and 45 watts. The Xeon E3-1220L has two cores at 2.2 GHz with 3 MB L3 cache. The E3-1260L is a Xeon quad-core processor at 2.4 GHz and 8 MB of L3 cache. P>
Even for the two remaining models following Intel has already announced the Power: Another Sandy Bridge CPU will launch later this year. You will get by with 15 watts, and may not get the brand name Xeon. For 2012, an Atom processor is designed for micro server that consumes less than 10 watts. For more information about the number of cores, clock speed and cache size are, however, not yet. P>

A micro server consists of numerous single-socket servers in a common housing. The ARM architecture threatens to hold over this area in the server segment entry. This system has developed among others by ARM-funded start-up Calxeda a low-power servers based on ARM cores up to 480. The power consumption per node should be only 5 watts. P>

The general manager of data center business from Intel, Kirk Skaugen, has recently expressed a negative opinion about the chances of low-power ARM processors in the server market. In his view, they will still play a role, but only leave a small impression in the market. The same applies to the nuclear-house platform. “We talk for years with clients’ on nuclear and servers. Frankly, there was not much interest in this architecture.” P>
On the occasion of the micro server chips now says Boyd Davis, vice president of the Architecture Group, this area will have four or five years accounted for ten percent of the server market. “We expect that the Xeon can cover most of the micro-server category. We are amazed at how much this journey has taken the field.” P>
Parallel to the server announcements Intel has a “Micro Server Evaluation Lab” was launched on the Internet. Where programmers can test in a simulation of how their software fails on such a new architecture to make improvements. By 2009 the company announced that it wanted to devise a standard for micro server. P>
