iDefense: Hacker offers 1.5 million Facebook accounts to purchase

Verisign company iDefense has discovered that a hacker who calls himself Kirllos, in an Internet forum 1.5 million Facebook accounts up for sale. The security researchers claims to have not been able to verify whether it is true credentials of Facebook users.

The offer is written in Russian. The prices depend on the number of contacts. Accounts with ten followers, or less cost $ 25 for 1000 (€ 18.70). For more than ten contacts of the price rises to $ 45 (€ 33.66). iDefense estimates that Kirllos has sold about 700,000 accounts.

Facebook also could not confirm the authenticity of the user data. A spokesman pointed out with respect to ZDNet that the company members who believe that their accounts had been compromised, offering help. Users could report a compromised account on the Facebook website or via the link “Forgot your password?” reset their password.

The social network admitted that were used by hackers acquired accounts for various illegal activities, including fraud referrals. It tried to criminals, a user’s friends to persuade them to transfer money. “In most cases, they take control over a Facebook account and claim that they put down somewhere abroad and need money,” it says on the website of the company.

In January, security researchers had warned that Facebook is susceptible to clickjacking. Thus it is possible to take control of an account while a user interacts with any other site. The researcher Nitesh Dhanjani also said a flaw in Facebook allow there third party applications, even without the explicit permission to access data from a user profile. Facebook claims to have a system that malicious links that can lead to such attacks, detect and block.
