Hewlett-Packard is reportedly developing its own operating system. The BusinessWeek reported, citing unnamed sources. According to the HP already employ some staff intensively with the issue.

According to the report, the HP operating system based on Linux, but contains some modifications for use in the mass market. The sources also report that the company is taking this step to be less dependent on Windows. HP is targeting apparently also from Apple’s customers who want to buy a computer with a user-friendly operating system.

HP CTO Phil McKinney is not denied that his company occupied with the development of an operating system. In his view, it is not sensible to invest a lot of money for this task in a research team.

HP already has experience in the development of user interfaces for operating systems. With the TouchSmart, the company has programmed an additional software that is operated via a touch screen and simplifies the multimedia features of Windows Vista.
