Hewlett-Packard introduces the SAN Blade Size

The StorageWorks P4800 BladeSystem SAN offers 63-504 TB of capacity (Image: HP).

With the P4800 BladeSystem SAN StorageWorks, Hewlett-Packard for the first time in a storage solution that combines the functions of a Storage Area Network (SAN) with a blade chassis. Due to the blade technology, the system was up to 38 percent cheaper than traditional SANs and reduces management overhead by up to 66 percent, the manufacturer promises. Its advantages are there to play, where you need high availability, scalable performance and capacity, and functionality in a transparent failover and replication capabilities.

Like all HP StorageWorks product line of solutions P4000 P4800 is also based on a scale-out cluster architecture with industry-standard components. Here, a single cluster node can be flexibly combined to create a jointly-to-manage iSCSI SAN: Each additional node provides additional storage capacity, bandwidth and capacity available through SAS or SAS MDL drives.

Network RAID, snapshots and clones, synchronous and asynchronous replication and failover transparent to ensure high availability. Data are automatically distributed across all available disk spindles. An integrated load balancing is used for load balancing.

The blade system in the base configuration offers 63 terabytes of storage capacity that is distributed to 140 per 450 GB of SAS drives at 15,000 rev / min. It can be expanded to up to 504 TB.

Administrators can perform all administration tasks for server, network and SAN preinstall deal with two tools. The Central Management Console (CMC) provides central management of SANs. For example, can be created so that logical unit numbers (LUN), snapshots and replication and failover solutions or manage complex control and define. The tool “Onboard Administrator” provides data on electricity consumption and temperature and is used to centrally manage the various hardware components of the blade system. Also, central to firmware updates are performed.

The tools are part of HP Software IQ 9.0, which offers 20 improvements and enhancements over the previous version 8.5. New, for example, global management and configuration rules and an improved alarm and event management.

The StorageWorks SAN P4800 BladeSystem is available immediately worldwide. The list price for a system with 63 terabytes of net space starts at € 226 100.
