The first attack of an Internet worm in the Apple operating system Mac OS X last week, has apparently not only irritates users. After the announcement of the debut OSX / Leap-A on 16 February, there were already a few days later the alarm. Reason for concern this time was not, however, ultimately classified as dangerous Inqtana-B worm, but a faulty signature anti-virus software maker Sophos. This classified clean infected files from Mac users than falsely. Deny permissions to the affected files, and delete operations for users with auto delete function were the result.
“This is a very unpleasant thing,” says Pino of Kienlin, managing director of Sophos Germany, the incident. But we have reacted immediately and come up within two hours with a corrected, can update, so Kienlin. Moreover, according Kienlin were all affected Mac customers contacted and referred to the malfunction. “Fortunately, now lying – at least as far as Germany is concerned – no damage reports,” says Kienlin. He also denied that the errors crept in can be associated with a lack of Mac-related know-how. “The fact that the faulty signature is the Mac operating system is concerned, was purely coincidental,” said Kienlin.
Sophos, meanwhile, has announced that “improving the quality of standardized processes even further, so that such a failure does not happen again.” The company also confirmed that the damaged signature actually lead to data loss in combination with the optional automatic deletion function could. Sophos customers would therefore raise awareness even further and recommends the auto delete function to use with caution. Removal of the function was not planned, as customers and administrators have repeatedly pointed out that they do not want to miss this optional feature, so Kienlin.
