Matsushita Electric Industrial, better known under the brand name Panasonic, and SanDisk and Toshiba have signed an agreement on comprehensive cooperation. Together, they want a security memory card to develop and market the next generation.

Worldwide there, the company said in a statement, a rapidly growing need for removable flash memory cards. The cards would be a “compact, reliable and easy to use media” to store large amounts of visual, audio and other data for digital music players, cameras, personal digital assistants (PDAs), video cameras and mobile phones.

The agreement aims to jointly develop a small-scale High-Speed-Schreib/Lese-Memory-Card, which is able to offer an SDMI (Secure Digital Music Initiative) high grade copy protection for music, videos and commercial content .

The trial phase of the new Secure Digital Memory Card will begin in the first quarter of 2000. The serial production will likely start in the second quarter of 2000. The first products to work with the new card should be available in the first half of next year.
