The system, which relies largely on processors from Nvidia graphics specialist, surpassed the previous record holder, the supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, with 1.75 petaflops. P>
The new system also depends on the current runner-up of the supercomputing ranking, Nebulae, from. This is currently classified with 1.271 petaflops, it is also a Chinese system based on Nvidia. Quadrillion floating point operations are petaflops per second. P> p>

Tianhe-1A is thus the next edition of the TOP500 list of supercomputers lead. In detail, the system consists of 7168 graphics processors (GPU) of the type of Nvidia Tesla M2050, combined with 14 336 Intel Xeon CPUs. According to the Nvidia GPUs use of not only high performance but also the relatively low energy consumption due to of 4.04 megawatts. A single high-end GPU typically contains several hundreds of processor cores, which speeds up certain kinds of calculations very efficiently. P>

Tianhe-1A was designed by the Chinese University of Defence Technology. According to Nvidia, he stands in the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin. Among the application areas of astrophysics, materials science and biochemistry belong. P>
With 24 supercomputers on the TOP500 list is now China, together with Germany in fourth place. Before them, the U.S., Britain and France are placed. Summing up the performance of all systems represented, China is reached after the United States and ahead of Germany in second place. P>
