Astra heralds the end of analogue satellite TV

Image: SES Astrad European satellite operator SES Astra has indicated last week that the analog TV will be switched off in 500 days. From 1 May 2012 can receive a satellite dish owners, only digital channels. Currently about 3.6 million households watch analog satellite television. This corresponds to about 20 percent of all customers.

To be equipped for digital reception, the receiver must at least be replaced. In very old SAT systems have also installed a new LNB on the dish. At the orbital position 19.2 degrees East, will be broadcast by the station for the German-speaking countries, sends Astra analogue channels only in the frequency range from 10.7 to 11.7 GHz. Many digital stations are around the range 11.7 to 12.7 GHz. Therefore, an LNB can be used that supports the high frequencies.

Inexpensive digital receivers that receive SDTV programs, there is significantly less than 50 €. Who wants to receive HDTV programming, must spend about 100 €. In this price range too receivers are available that can be used as a digital video recorder. Via the USB 2.0 interface can be connected to an external hard drive or a USB stick. A USB flash drive with 16 GB of memory, enough for about three 90-minute film quality in SDTV. With a 16 GB HD recording take only about two hours.

The public stations are broadcasting their HDTV channels in unencrypted form. Private broadcasters such as RTL and can be received free of charge only in SDTV Pro 7. For the HDTV program is a “service fee” of € 50 a year overdue for a smart card. The receiver must also support the HD platform – either directly or via a CI +-module. For some receivers with CI-interface standard is also an HD-in module.

HD + is unpopular with viewers. The platform enables broadcasters, recording of shipments prohibited. Can also prevent the fast-forward recorded programs so that viewers are forced to watch advertising. The magazine gave the chip technology, hence the negative award “brake of the Year 2010″. The citation reads: “This combines the disadvantages of free and pay TV at the expense of the audience. You get television advertising, and may even pay for it”

The terrestrial TV reception has been fully digitized. This allows more channels with better quality broadcast. The switch to DVB-T in Germany was without significant problems. In addition, since fewer frequencies are needed, could a portion of the television spectrum for LTE-800 can be used. So in the coming years, a nationwide broadband internet supply can be constructed via radio.

Astra means for switching off the analogue television to more TV programs and other digital services can be offered. Instead of one analog TV program per transponder can send up to ten digital television channels.

The cable provider will however continue to offer analog TV programs. 30 analog television programs show about a net bandwidth of 1.5 Gbit / s per cluster, which could be used for more digital channels and faster Internet connections. For Internet-cable customers, this means that the “Up-to-speed” could be achieved more often if the provider waived analog programs.

They fear, however, the purely digital receivers to lose their privilege to residents of apartment buildings for a cable connection must be paid by levy, even if they do not want cable television. Since the digital reception of an access control device per reception is possible, the reasons fall away for the privilege.
