Apple reportedly interested in chip maker ARM

iPad processor A4 (Image: Apple) Apple will reportedly take over the chip maker Advanced RISC Machines (ARM), which primarily manufactures processors for smartphones. Or so reports the British newspaper ‘London Evening Standard “, citing inside sources.

The Cambridge-based company had co-founded Apple in 1990 together with Acorn Computers and VLSI Technology itself. It should provide chips for the Newton PDA. As the success failed to materialize, the late 90s, Apple sold its stake in the chipmaker.

Apple currently uses CPU based on ARM architecture in several devices such as iPhone and iPad and is ARM’s most important client. The iPad used in the A4 is the first chip that Apple marketed under its own name. He was probably developed by P.A. Semi, a chip manufacturer, Apple had bought in 2008.

Through the acquisition of ARM, Apple could improve its position against competitors significantly reducing competition by excluding the highly sought-ARM designs or innovations deliver late. ARM-based processors used in computers and smart phones from virtually all leading vendors like Google, HTC, Nokia, Sony and Samsung are used.

Due to the takeover rumors put the ARM share increased significantly and currently stands at 2.51 British pounds. It is speculated that Apple could offer about 4 pounds per share, which would evaluate ARM with over 5.2 billion pounds.

An acquisition of this size can easily afford to Apple. Finally, the company from Cupertino in the past fiscal second quarter on revenue of $ 13.5 billion net profit of 3.07 billion, or $ 3.33 per share retracted. The cash assets now stands at over 41 billion dollars.
