The free version of the word processing program WordPerfect 8 for Linux has been accessed a million times. This was announced by the Canadian software company Corel.
The number of views could be a sign that more and more PC users to play on their Linux computers, the company speculates. The 23.6-MB file was made available for download in December 1998 and has more than 70,000 viewings a week, said Corel.
“We are surprised at how good it was assumed,” said company spokeswoman Judith O’Brien. “We knew that there will be interest, but we did not expect this level. We are very pleased with the outcome,” she said.
The spokeswoman would not say whether the Linux version has become more popular than the commercial. The stripped-something free program for Linux can be used for 90 days without registration. The full version for Linux or Windows costs in the U.S., around $ 50.
With the ability to download free Corel wanted to try to make up lost ground against Microsoft. Wordperfect was in the U.S. once a leader in word processing before Corel had to relinquish the title to the company of Bill Gates.
