Analysts ARM listen the first time as a PC processor

Analysts at IDC

lead in their latest quarterly report on the market for PC processors for the first time not only on Intel-compatible processors, but also other types such as ARM processors. They are widespread because of their power-saving technology for high-end smartphones and Tablet PCs, and are therefore usually associated with mobile devices.

“For the first time makes IDC forecasts the market for PC processors, sorted by processor architecture. Consideration will be x86 (Intel and Advanced Micro Devices), and ARM,” Shane Rau writes in a press release. ARM chips are, for example, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Apple (with Samsung) or Nvidia made.

“According to IDC’s expectations are based by 2015, more than 13 percent of PC processors on the ARM architecture,” it says in the statement. Microsoft’s upcoming operating system Windows 8, which will be on the market until 2013, for example, ARM processors to be run. Until then, may be tablet computer with Windows 8 in use.

According to IDC, in 2011 in the United States between 40 and 50 million Tablet computers are similar to Apple’s iPad sold. These sales figures are according to Gartner, sales of desktop PCs for home users to deteriorate significantly.

For the first quarter of 2011, IDC sees a growth of 7.4 percent still in worldwide sales of PC processors compared to the first quarter of 2010. Also for the full year, there was an increase. The analysts raised their expectations for growth in terms of numbers, for 2011 from 10.1 to 10.3 percent. “In general, the conditions to see properly out of the demand in the second half of 2011. The earthquake and tsunami in Japan had little effect on the supply chain at PC,” Rau writes. “In the medium to make us more likely to impact on demand for PCs in Japan and the associated demand for PC processors worry.”

The revenues of the overall market is expected to rise after 2011 IDC estimates by 17.6 percent to nearly 43 billion dollars (29 billion euros). The shares of each party to this cake was “by and large remarkably stable,” says Rau. Intel hold 80.8 percent of the processor units shipped, AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) lies at 18.9 percent. That does not change over the fourth quarter of 2010.

HIGHLIGHT Multi-core ARM CPUs: Does the Wintel era to an end soon? Modern

Tablets use dual-core ARM processors. In August, Nvidia wants to bet on a quad-core. Benchmarks show that they achieve the power of desktop CPUs. That could be dangerous for Intel and Microsoft. »Read more …
