AMD introduces its fastest yet Quad Core Processor from

AMD has expanded its range of quad-core processors up. The new Phenom X4 980 Black Edition (BE) runs with a base clock of 3.7 GHz. That’s 100 MHz more than the previous top model X4 975 BE.

As a Black Edition chip 980 via the X4 has a free multiplier, so that the clock will simply increase in the BIOS settings, or using overclocking software, without that other components will also be overclocked. The quad-core CPU, like all other representatives of X4-6 MB L3 cache per core and 512KB L2 cache. The power consumption of AMD’s like the Black Edition X4 models 955, 970 and X4 X4 975 with 125 watts TDP on.

With a list price of $ 185 X4 980 BE is $ 25 cheaper than Intel’s Core i5-2500, which is clocked at 3.3 GHz and also has about 6 MB of L3 cache. However, he may first tests show that despite overclocked to 4.2 GHz with air cooling can not keep up with Intel’s Sandy Bridge CPU.

Because of the new AMD processor might only be interesting for users who want to upgrade an existing system with the sockets AM2 + or AM3. All others should rather rely on or wait for Intel CPUs on AMD’s next-generation bulldozer.

In AMD’s official price list of the X4 980 BE is not yet listed. However, it is still at the level of 31 January and should be updated shortly.
