Yesterday, Intel’s rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), its Athlon chip with a clock speed of 650 MHz presented. Overall, the chip manufacturer in the coming weeks will deliver four Athlons: 500, 550, 600 and 650 MHz.

Unlike the Pentium III from Intel (Frankfurt Stock Exchange: INL) has the Athlon over a system with a clock speed of 200 MHz (PIII 100 MHz) and five “extended multimedia instruction sets,” more than Intel can boast with its SIMD Instructions (SIMD stands for “Single Instruction Multiple Data”).

AMD had decided in the last week for early delivery of a 650-MHz version of its latest chips, after Intel had added to its range of Pentium III chips with a variation of 600 MHz. This makes the PIII is now available in versions with clock speeds of 600 MHz, 550 MHz, 500 MHz and 450 MHz.
