Engineers at IBM Research Lab have invented a new, more effective implementation of liquid cooling system with a single phase state of the refrigerant. In general, the essence of the invention consists in applying a set of miniature nozzles for supplying the liquid in the cooling zone and the distributed architecture of collecting the heated working medium. For more information about the new technology, IBM plans to present at the conference ITherma, which will be held in San Diego next week.

According to the developers, the performance of the new cooling system is estimated at 370 W / sm.kv., whereas the capacity of existing liquid coolers are limited to a capacity of about 60 W / sm.kv. To implement a distributed system of submission and selection of the liquid used an array of tiny nozzles arranged in increments of 100 mm and the density of their distribution reach to 50 thousand in the area of ​​4 sm.kv.

This cooling system – think the developers – not only superior to existing implementations in performance, but also can be used in future developments for the integration of the heat-removing elements at the base of the chips, which would eliminate the thermal interface between the chip and coolant. The architecture of the cooling system looks very promising in terms of performance, but many challenges for its implementation, especially – to provide reliable isolation of fluid from the electronic circuits. Currently, development on this subject are at an early stage.
